WIRE FRAUD: Have the Conversation BEFORE Closing
In case you hadn’t heard a local buyer jsut lost their life savings of $105000 to Wire Fraud. It is still happening - Please educate your customers - sellers included.
Wire fraud is a very real threat in real estate transactions. Criminals can impersonate title companies, agents and other trusted parties using compromised emails, spoofed numbers and increasingly sophisticated technology. The FBI reported approximately $275 million in real estate-related fraud losses in 2025.
As REALTORS®, one of the best things we can do is educate our customers early.
Remind buyers and sellers:
• Never trust emailed wiring instructions without verification.
• Be suspicious of last-minute changes.
• Always verify wiring instructions using a known, independently verified phone number before sending money.
A two-minute conversation could help protect someone's life savings.
Talk about wire fraud. Talk about it early. And talk about it more than once.
